Commitments 

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a federal law that provides for the education of students with disabilities. All students with disabilities, ages 3-21, have the right to receive a free, appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment, with their non-disabled peers, based on identified needs included in their Individualized Education Program (IEP).  The Sumter County Schools Program for Exceptional Students strives to provide a full range of services and supports for children with disabilities. The Program works interdependently and responsibly by providing assistance related to programming, professional learning, training of personnel, and assuring compliance with legal due process issues. The Program for Exceptional Students is committed to providing the assistance needed to ensure that all children with disabilities are receiving the most appropriate services possible.

Section 504

Any student or parent or guardian (“grievant”) may request an impartial hearing due to the school system’s actions or inactions regarding your child's identification, evaluation, or educational placement under Section 504.  Requests for an impartial hearing must be in writing to the school system’s Section 504 Coordinator; however, a grievant’s failure to request a hearing in writing does not alleviate the school system’s obligation to provide an impartial hearing if the grievant orally requests an impartial hearing through the school system’s Section 504 Coordinator.  The school system’s Section 504 Coordinator will assist the grievant in completing the written Request for Hearing.  The Section 504 Coordinator may be contacted through the school system’s central office.  Copies of the 504 Procedural Safeguards and Notice of Rights of Students and Parents Under Section 504 may be found at the system website under Program for Exceptional Students Document Uploads, or may be picked up at the central office or at any of the school offices.

As required by Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, the Age Discrimination Act of 1975, and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the Sumter County School District does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability in admission to its programs, services, activities, or employment in access to them in treatment of individuals, or in any aspect of their operations. 

Child Find

Sumter County Schools has an obligation under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to identify, locate, and evaluate all students with disabilities residing within the district who are in need of special education and related services from birth through 21 years of age, regardless of the severity of their disability. Child Find activities include all identification and evaluation procedures used when a child is suspected of being a child with a disability.
