About our School District

The Sumter County School District is located in Sumter County, Georgia, the home of the 39th President of the United States, Jimmy Carter.  The District serves over 4,700 students from Americus, Leslie, Desoto and Plains. Teachers, administrators, support staff members and the Board of Education are committed to achieving the mission of graduating all students. We are also committed to providing a quality, equitable education for all students and providing appropriate professional learning opportunities for all staff members.

  1. From I-75, go west onto Highway 26.  This is just south of Perry.  Travel west to Montezuma.  Go straight through Montezuma until you intersect with Highway 49 South.  Turn south (left) at this major intersection.  No traffic light except for blinking caution light and you must STOP.  49 will take you to Andersonville and Americus.  About 6+ miles south of Andersonville, take Southerfield Road to the right.  (At the bottom of a low hill and beginning to climb slightly).   This is a busy intersection, but again no traffic light and a rural area.  Southerfield leads past South Georgia Technical College on the left.  You will see a large aircraft on the left; continue to railroad crossing and another intersection.  Stop and turn left.  About 1 block ahead a right turn lane forms and you enter that lane and turn right onto Industrial Blvd.  Continue past some industrial buildings, cross railroad, and turn left onto Learning Lane.  The high school will be on the right after you turn and bus shop on the left.  You will be facing our building and you may park in front.  It is a large warehouse type building.
  2. If you are traveling on US Highway 19 from Hartsfield Airport where I-75 and Highway 41 intersect with 19, Hwy 19 will take you directly to Americus and is largely 4 laned.  As you approach (about 135 miles) Americus businesses, Rucker Street is on the left (Americus Sumter County Parks and Recreation Department is on this corner).  Take Rucker Street through government housing to a 5 way intersection.  You must stop here.  Turn hard left onto Bumphead Road and go past Georgia Forestry on the right an around big curve to right.  You will see pecan orchard (rural area) on the right after which, you will be approaching the school complex.  Pass Sumter County Elementary and turn right at gate and cyclone fence onto a 1 way street.  Go past Sumter Elementary and Sumter Primary.  You will come to a stop facing the end of our administration building.  Turn left and immediately right into parking lot.  Large warehouse type building.
  3. From Highway 19 South (Albany and points south of Americus), stay on 19 past Granny's Kitchen restaurant on left (first of four traffic lights), past second and third traffic lights.  At third light, you will go through major intersection which would take you into "downtown" Americus.  Don't turn, continue on 19 past fourth light and up a hill, move to right turn lane.
